Work (W) is the amount of energy(either external or internal) that is required to move a body of
mass ‘M’ through the distance of ‘D’ with the application of force ‘F’.
Mathematically, Work (W) = Force applied (F)*Distance moved (D)
In the physical sense, a man standing perfectly still for 15 hours holding up a 200 kg bucket of
cement does not perform any work because even though there is force (F = mass * acceleration
due to gravity), there is no movement of mass i.e. Distance moved = 0. Hence work done is zero.
