Erikson held the opinion that personality constantly evolved throughout human
development. He did this in 8 stages in which each step had a unique aspect about it. In every
stage of his evolution, he states that every individual experiences a crisis that would positively or
negatively affect their personality. The troubles most humans faced were predominantly
psychosocial, which encompasses the needs of an individual colliding with the needs of society.
Therefore, this essay compares and contrasts generativity versus stagnation and ego integrity
versus despair.
Generativity versus stagnation is the seventh stage of his evolution theory. It is associated
with care. It is based on the analysis of mature adults aged 40 to 65 years (Newton et al.,2020).
The unique aspect of this stage is that humans set out to leave a mark in the world. It may
manifest in establishing long-term relationships with significant others or nurturing children.
Their main intention is to establish something that will benefit other people aside from
themselves. During this stage, there is a strong urge to do things that change the society that they
live in as they try to establish a positive outcome.
Ego integrity versus despair is the eighth and final stage of evolution. It is mainly
associated with wisdom, as the people who fall under this category are seniors aged 65 years to
death (van et al., 2020). Contrary to the norm where there is increased research on childhood
behavior, Eriskosn paints a perception of the need to research an aging population. It is mainly
defined by analyzing whether one has had a fulfilling life. Based on their decisions, the goals
