1.Explain the Wests role as the center during colonization, the other concept and the
subaltern
The postcolonial theories are based on the otherness concept. This concept is based on identity
and difference, not forgetting double ness. The Wests concept is orientally inclined to viewing
the world as split into mutually excluding other parts: This means that if the west is good,
sensible, masculine and ordered then this made the orient vile, chaotic, feminine and irrational.
This concept sees the world as binary opposites that will form a dominance relation.
Otherness was also referred to as alterity by philosophers to show the change between the word
and rationale.
The subaltern we’re also known as people of “inferior classes”. They were denied a voice in
society and were politically, geographically and socially outside a colony. In accordance to postcolonial terms the subaltern was anyone and anything getting limited imperialism. They included
workers, peasants and all those denied of ‘hegemonic power’.

2.What is ‘write back’ and why does Chinua feel the need to write her story
“Write back”
This is postcolonial term that means challenging stories, ideas and people’s ways of life,
cultures, histories and stories.
Chinua Achebe’s Things Fall Apart is a response to Hegel’s description and dismissal of Africa.
He writes his book in accordance with his familiarity of the African culture, his tribe the Igbo
value systems. He reacts to the discourse of the post-colonial period, during and after
colonization too. His work brings out to the world African culture and customs. He also
challenges who has the notion to determine what defines culture and humanity.
He felt the need to respond to Hegel’s work as he felt it was biased, inacceptable and inaccurate.
