Description

As the technologies used in LANS and WLANs become faster and better, the amount of traffic the backbone network needs to support is increasing at an even faster rate. Coupled with the significant changes in the best practice recommendations for the design of backbone networks, this means that many organizations have had to replace their backbones completely. We would like to think that these have been one-time expenditures, but, as traffic grows, demand placed on the backbone will continue to increase meaning the amount spent on switches and routers for use in the backbone will increase. Designing backbone networks to be easily upgradable is now an important management goal.

Sunshine Healthcare Corporation owns a small company that specializes in medical telemetry consulting projects. The projects typically involve one or two engineers who do data intensive analyses for clinics and hospitals. Because so much data are needed, the projects are stored on the company’s high-capacity server but moved to the engineers’ workstations for analysis. The company is moving into new offices and wants you to design its network. It has a staff of 8 engineers (which is expected to grow to 12 over the next 5 years), plus another 8 management and clerical employees who also need network connections but whose needs are less intense.

Assignment: Evaluate the use of a backbone design by comparing and contrasting the different backbones and their uses. Design the network and describe the backbone network components and architectures. Be sure to include a diagram. Present methods to improve network performance for the future.

There are different types of backbones that can be used in networks. These are the serial
backbone, distributed backbone, the collapsed backbone as well as the parallel backbone. Each
of these backbones has different advantages and disadvantages. The choice to have any of the
above mentioned backbones is dependent on the required specifications of the network.
The serial backbone is made of two devices. At times, these can be more than two. The
devices are usually connected in a linked series (see Figure 1 below). It is a very simple kind of
backbone. This backbone can be made from routers, switches, and also gateways. It is critical
that the network designer considers the limit of the devices which are connected in the network
especially because they are connected in a repeating fashion. If such a limit is exceeded, the
network would have unexpected errors and also experience data loss. Sadly, this particular kind
of backbone is not very fault tolerant. It is not also very scalable. As such, it is not the best
backbone to use especially in a network intensive organization.

The distributed backbone is another commonly used kind of backbone. This particular
backbone makes use of the hierarchical design (Berde et al., 2014). In such a network design,
intermediate devices are connected to other multiple or even single connectivity devices. The
connectivity devices can be routers or switches. The main advantage of this particular backbone
is that it is scalable since new layers can be added to the network when there is need to. It is

easier to administrate as well as manage the network in this kind of backbone. Although the
design is different from the serial backbone, it is critical that the network designer to consider the
capability and capacity of the connectivity devices used in the backbone (Berde et al., 2014).
This will prevent issue such as unexpected errors as well as data loss in the network. It is
possible to have multiple LANs in the same backbone. Such LANs can be connected using
routers. This backbone is mainly characterized and preferred due to the fact that it is cheap, quick
to implement and also easy to manage.
The collapsed backbone network makes use of only one router (See Figure 2). As such,
this single router has to be pretty powerful to be able to handle the entire network. This rou...
