Some of the traumas that lead to PTSD include military combat, terrorist attacks,
prolonged sexual abuse, serious accidents, hostage situations, witnessing violent deaths, violent
assaults, natural disasters, and death of close friends or family member (Ullman et al. n.p.). The
traumas often lead to abnormal adrenaline levels that in turn trigger immediate reactions in the
body. They also result in significant changes in the brain and can have devastating ramifications.
The symptoms of PTSD vary from victim to another. Some of the general symptoms
include avoidance, changes in emotional reactions, intrusive memories, and negative changes in
thinking and mood. The intrusive memories can come in the form of distressing memories of the
event, upsetting nightmares about it, or recurrent flashbacks. Avoidance often arrives in the
shape of trying to avoid anything that may remind the victim about the event. The adverse
