What Happens to a Dream Deferred?
Does it dry up
like a raisin in the sun?
Or fester like a sore—
And then run?
Does it stink like rotten meat?
Or crust and sugar over—
like a syrupy sweet?
Maybe it just sags
like a heavy load.

poem itself?
The term deferred is the delay, postponed or temporary. The meaning of the term deferred
has been related to the title of the poem and the poem itself because based on the message of
the poem, it exemplifies on how the dream has gone and vanished in a moment.
2. What do you think this poem is about? Explain your thinking.
I think this poem is talking about the postponement and the failure of making the dreams come
true. This is because, from the title itself " What happens to a Dream Deferred?". It shows the
possible reasons about the delaying of the coming of dreams to be true and it was also tackling
about the failures. Failed to achieve the dream that has been desired for.
3. What did you like or dislike about this poem? Explain your thinking.
I don't like the message of the point. This is because it contains more on vanishing instead of
inspiring everyone to fulfill their dreams. It seemed like dreams are very hard to have and too
difficult to achieve.
