1) Na+ voltage gated channels are opened
2) Increasing Na+ inside the cell increases the internal voltage until an action potential threshold is reached
3) K+ channels open and K+ is released from inside the cell to outside. Positive ions moving to the outside of the cell begin to decrease internal cell charge.
4) The cell hyperpolarizes preventing the signal from propagating backwards down the axon. Sodium potassium pumps begin to pump Na+ out and K+ in and return the internal cell charge to -70 mV
