Factories have fled in droves to resettle in Mexico and Asia in order to become more competitive in the global marketplace noduction (Schwartz). Became of this, unemployment rates in areas that once depended on the manufacturing industry have skyrocketed and economie hardship has fallen upon the shoulders of millions of working class people (Schwartz). Yet, while most Americans are aware of what manufacturing entails, most don't truly understand how important this one industry is to non- college educated individuals living within the Rust Belt. For example, take the story of James Branch: a forty-year-old Baltimore resident who currently earns a living by working as a skilled machine operate for the Marlin Steel Company (Schwartz). Although he lives a fairly comfortable now, however, his life was not always so economically stable. Before he was a metalworker, Branch spent his years selling drugs and raising a child by himself as a high school dropout (Schwartz). After being caught and serving time in jail, Branch could only make minimum wage by working at Popeyes (Schwartz). Fortunately, just when Branch was about to return to a life of crime, he discovered a metalworking programa program that he would soon join, graduate from, and use his newfound skills to secure a job as a skilled metalworker making over $20 an hour (Schwartz). In other words, the manufacturing industry saved branch from returning to prison and gave him the ability to take control of his life. Unfortunately, Branch's success was only possible given his hard work and a significant amount of luck because of the industry's recent troubles. As stated carlier, manufacturing jobs have shrunk by one-third in the past few decades, leaving millions of individuals out of work (Schwartz). Given these facts, how was is possible that Branch found a manufacturing job? Simply put, while colossal manufacturing corporations have shipped jobs overseas, small startup companies have risen to fill the void. Today, the rise of small, independent manufacturing companies are the primary reason for why the vast majority of workers in this industry are employed by companies that have fewer than twenty workers (Schwartz). Because of this economic phenomenon, Branch has stated that he went from "minimum wage at Popeyes to making almost 70k a year" and that his new job has forever changed is life. Yet, while the rise of small manufacturing companies are certainly helping to heal the wounds of this damaged industry, the worst injuries have yet to be treated. A prime example of this can be seen in Baltimore, where the increase in murders have increased more than any other city in the entire nation (Schwartz). And while the rise of small manufacturing companies have, again, the struggles associated with competing against corporate giants like Under Armor along with provided much needed jobs in Rust Belt cities like Boston, Chicago, new York, and Pittsburgh, the "soaring cost of health insurance and other benefits” make it increasingly difficult for the small businesses to survive (Schwartz). In conclusion, while the rise of small manufacturing companies has allowed many unemployed Americans the chance to work stable jobs, the terrible effects resulting from the damaged industry and the presence of colossal corporations make it very challenging for the small manufacturers to become more prominent and competitive. Personally, I believe that this your language problem stems from the free trade vs protectionism debate. Unfortunately, while I sympathize with the millions of Americans that have been put out of work by free trade deals and automation, I think that it is impossible for America to compete on the global stage with nations like China and Malaysia: two countries that can put forth the cheapest products because their manufacturers make considerably less than American manufacturers.
