Question description

As identified in the UMUC Haircuts Case Study, there are at several areas where Myra’s business could use improvement, including:  Customer Scheduling, Employee Scheduling, Supply Management, Customer Information, and Marketing.  Over time, each of these will likely have an IT solution.  However, you know that if you could combine these into an enterprise system, you would be able to significantly improve the operations of UMUC Haircuts.  You begin your analysis by answering the following questions:

  1. What opportunities are being missed when each little area (scheduling, supply management, marketing, and others) has its own “stove piped” data?  (Provide some examples.)
  2. What benefits will the UMUC Haircuts business realize if you implement an enterprise-wide system?  Identify how Myra as the manager will benefit from having additional information available.
  3. What types of decisions that she makes as the manager would be improved if she had all this information in one place?
  4. Would it make the most sense to start with a CRM, an SCM or an ERP system for UMUC Haircuts and why.  Keep in mind that additional systems and functionality could come later.

First, review the 'triple constraints' of IT Project Management as covered in Chapter 13 below then address the questions:

Projects are managed by managing the triple constraints, which are:

Scope: The project scope is the definition of what the project is supposed to accomplish—its outcomes or deliverables. Scope is measured in terms of the project size, goals, and requirements.

Time: A project is made of up tasks. In defining the tasks, they should start with an active verb, such as: purchase servers, apply for permits, and interview vendors. Each task is assigned a duration—which is the difference between the task's start date and its end date. The project's time is determined by task durations and task dependencies. Some tasks are dependent on other tasks being completed before they can begin. For example, in construction, a hole must be dug before the pouring of concrete can start. Task durations and task dependencies determine the time required to complete the project.

Budget: Projects are approved subject to their costs.

These constraints are interrelated, so they must be managed together for the project to be completed on time, within budget, and to specification (spec).

Please address the following 3 questions:

  1. What do you think is the most important of the triple constraints of project management  for UMUC Haircuts?
  2. Explain briefly why you selected that constraint.
  3. Discuss how you would ensure that this aspect was well addressed to maximize Myra's chance for success.
