A mixture of nitrogen and argon gases at a total pressure of 708 mm Hg contains nitrogen at a partial pressure of 280 mm Hg. If the gas mixture contains 2.95 grams of nitrogen, how many grams of argon are present?

_____ g Ar
Feb 24th, 2015

molar fraction = 280/708 = 0.395

mol of nitrogen = 2.95/14 = 0.211

so:

mol of Ar = 0.323 and

mass of Ar = 0.323*40 = 12.93 grams
