Diversity
Diversity refers to the difference of characteristics of people existing in the same
community. It is very rare to find a community that share exactly the same characteristics i.e. a
non-diverse community. Workplaces, learning institutions, hospitals etc. are examples of
communities where diversity can be observed. Some of characteristics which can be observed in
a diverse community include, ethnicity, gender, religion, and social status. This characteristics
are just a few of what diversity is.
Ethnicity refers to the ethnic composition of a community. A race is a group of
individuals who can be distinguished from other individuals on basis of their physical
characteristic e.g. color of skin. Most communities have experienced ethnic or racial mix. The
challenge is on dealing with the changes brought about by racial mix Race and ethnic diversity is
a sensitive issue Ethnicity or the race of individual although biological can be used to categorize

people. Through daily interactions with the members of our communities their language accent
or color mark them as race or ethnic distinct. Although the power of racism is underestimated,
some practices and experiences make people of color feel alienated, overlooked or
underestimated. E.g. in a learning institutions a student of color can be advised to take a less
