Examine the economic, social, and political experiences of black peoples in Africa and the Diaspora. 4. Investigate the social and political dimensions of black cultural expressions in Africa and the Diaspora. 5. Consider contemporary issues facing peoples of African-descent worldwide, including the continued relevance of race in the 21stcentury. 6. Move beyond and challenge static, monolithic, and stereotypical ideas and images of the “Black Experience” in order to understand and appreciate both the similarities and differences between peoples of African-descent in Africa and the Diaspora. 7. Develop and refine students’ critical thinking skills, as well as improve both oral and written communication skills. 8. Develop and/or apply context-appropriate actions to address global and cultural issues or situations. 1. Gain knowledge of global and cultural systems and issues. STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES 1. Students will analyze how diversity affects interactions with major societal institutions (such as health care, criminal justice, education, employment, voting, military) from contemporary and/or historical perspectives. 2. Students will weigh options/planned actions (such as policies and practices) to formulate possible solutions to reduce inequality and disparities in access and success in major societal institutions (such as health care, criminal justice, education, employment, voting, military) 3. Students will explain the development of Africana Studies as an interdisciplinary field of study designed to address the historical and contemporary distortions and omissions of black peoples from higher education. 4. Students will assess the various strategies that black peoples have adopted in their struggles for survival, equality, and human dignity in Africa and the Diaspora. 5. Students will analyze the significance and multiple roles of black cultural expressions in Africa and the Diaspora. 6. Students will synthesize different types and sources of information to assess global/cultural issues or situations. By analyzing the nature and significance of the black experience in Africa and the African Diaspora, students develop critical and analytical thinking and problem-solving skills. In this analysis, students are frequently asked to explain their conclusions verbally during class, which builds oral communication skills, and through weekly reading responses and longer essays, which build written communication skills. The instructor will frequently challenge students’ interpretations, asking for clarification and presenting opposing sides of the argument, encouraging students to further refine critical and analytical thinking, problem solving, and written communication skills.
