Conclusions: Danesi talks about popular culture mediated through media - that's why he focuses in the 20th century. • Culture is a system of meaning. • Popular culture constantly changes. Popular culture does not recognize the division between high and low This division is social, to create class distinction. There is a debate between entertainment and engagement. • Popular culture appeals to emotional identification - it appeals to symbols that people can relate to. RIA ANY AROU 02 Reading Resume 1 In Chapter 2, Danesi (2008) introduces readers with different communication models of popular culture, as well as the possible psychological and sociological theories behind them. Critical theories that communication is the tool capitalists use to control the mass are also mentioned. The author illustrates semiotics as an important approach to study the media and popular culture. He defines and explains transgression theory, which relates to further discussions of moral panic theory, carnival theory and Feminism. Low-riding grows from a transgressive behavior to a lifestyle that is recognized by many people. Danesi (2008) argues that different "forms of pop culture are initially viewed as transgressing against mainstream values”, but “it is the act of transgression itself that enhances pop values”(p. 55). This theory argues that what seems to be different tend to gain more popularity in popular culture. Low rider was a transgressive behavior that caused concerns and moral panic in the beginning, but it gained its popularity among Chicanos. The reason was, according to the article from King (1981), “In white culture they like their cars jacked up in the back and fast; we have to be different so we have them low". The norm at the time was that cars were supposed to be high and fast. Low-riding, however, challenged this norm by driving cars in a totally different way. Chicanos used this transgressive behavior as a symbol to distinguish themselves from the white culture. The spirit of rebellion within this lifestyle attracted more and more people to join the club of low-riding. However, low-riding, as a part of the popular culture, is not going to bring any real social change. As Carnival Theory suggests, transgression is a way of releasing rebellion, but “the ritual of transgression actually validates social norms”(Danesi, 2008, p. 59). The moment when people distinguish a behavior from normal to transgressive, they have used the norms as their standards. Low riders seem to challenge the norms by modifying cars and driving them in a certain way. However, as low riders recognize their behaviors as different and rebellious, they also confirm the norm of how people are supposed to drive their cars.
