Strategic planning has become a function of survival in the health care industry, according to the article by the National Center for Healthcare Leadership (NCHL), Healthcare Leadership Competency Model (2010). The competencies outlined detail very specifically what the core competencies must be as are the extended responsibilities of the modern healthcare executive. These competencies cover three core groups which are Transformation, Execution and People. Each of these groups encompass a range of skills that are acquired over time and throughout the professional development of the executive. These groups can be broken down into 26 separate categories. Since the early 1983 when Medicare implemented a modernized payment system, healthcare leaders were forced to modernize and find ways to deliver more efficient healthcare (Ginter, Duncan & Swayne, 2013). More than the issue of efficiency, the healthcare industry has as also seen consumers become more educated though the internet and most recently social media. No longer do they want to be viewed as “users but rather as “consumers (Ginter, Duncan & Swayne, (2013). As healthcare has evolved so have the demands placed on leaders. Emphasis has been placed on improving the post graduate education of health care executives which help them to keep pace with the rapid changes in the industry (NCHL, 2010). Professional development has taken on more of a detailed process which covers all the relevant topics which relate to the needs of executives at any particular stage in their careers.
