This week we are asked to discuss our proposed topic, The goal of this research is to determine if a child’s group identity affects whether their academic performance is affected and whether this will transfer to higher grades causing disengagement from the educational process.

The population of focus would be elementary school-aged children. The main phenomena to be observed will be grades, attendance and overall participation, parental support, and encouragement.

The trends noted have been that more and more young children are receiving mental health diagnoses. The most popular is ADHD, which causes impairments in adaptive functioning which manifests in aggression, poor impulse control, learning difficulties, and low motivation which puts those suffering from the disorder at risk for social, educational, and relationship challenges (Houck, Kendall, Miller, Morrell & Wiebe, 2012).

To fulfill the requirements by using design thinking, this researcher will emphatically observe selected participants in the learning environment and gather data on support systems they utilize for success to develop a prevention tool that will reach all deemed at risk in a unique and individualized manner.
