COLORFUL GRIGNARD REACTION2 Pre-lab assignment: Prepare a sketch of the reaction apparatus to be used. Your drawing must be detailed enough that the apparatus can be built with no other resources. In this experiment you will be assigned the synthesis of either crystal violet or malachite green. Obtain SDS information for 1-bromobutane, 4-bromo-N,N-dimethylaniline, and magnesium metal. Also, obtain SDS information for diethyl carbonate if you are assigned to synthesize crystal violet, or for methyl benzoate if you are assigned to synthesized malachite green. You will prepare two stoichiometry tables for your assigned dye, one corresponding to equation 1 and the other corresponding to either equation 2 or 3, depending upon your specific dye. The reaction sequence for this experiment should be viewed as two steps, each requiring a separate Stoichiometric Table. Both sets of Stoichiometry Information, including accompanying calculations, must be completed preceding the entire Experimental Outline. The first reaction will be the preparation of a Grignard reagent, and the second step will be a reaction of an ester with the Grignard reagent to prepare the dye. For the first reaction, provide a stoichiometry table using equation 1 (shown below). In this reaction, 1- bromobutane (also known as n-butyl bromide) acts as a catalyst to increase the reaction rate between Mg and 4-bromo-N,N-dimethylaniline, and iodine (12) reacts with Mg to increase the surface area of reactive Mg metal. N" 12, 1-bromobutane (eq 1) Mg + diethyl ether Br MgBr or the second reaction, depending upon your assigned dye, provide a stoichiometry table using one of e following reaction equations: هله HCI crystal violet 3 (eq 2) diethyl ether MgBr
