Dual Process Model Theory
The dual process model theory, based on the article is useful in explaining information
processing as a cognitive psychology theory. Two contrasting information processing styles are
applicable in the dual process information model namely, the quick and automatic style and the
qualitative. The theory, therefore, distinguishes between the two processes that are involved in
social judgment and behavior based on whether they function automatically or in a controlled
manner. The author identifies automatic processes as those that are elicited deliberately, do not
require cognitive resources and occur unconsciously therefore not stopped voluntarily. On the
other hand, the controlled processes involved in information processing are initiated consciously,
are stoppable and require cognitive resources. The two most common dual process theories are
the likelihood and the systematic heuristic model, which are quite critical in elaborating
information processing and social behaviors in an individual.
Based on the elaboration likelihood model, the level of persuasion of an individual is
determined by how determined and motivated individuals involve themselves with information
processing (Carlston, 2013). The higher one’s cognitive elaboration is, the more likely one is to
process information successfully. The likelihood model applied in information processing
explains why one thinks of some issues unconsciously and acts without giving it a second
thought. On the other hand, those individuals at the lower end of the information continuum
engage in less accurate object-relevant information processing. However, Heuristic model is
involved with the, accessibility, activation as well as applicability of the heuristics that are learnt
(Carlston, 2013). As such, based on the author, the chances that one engages in the processing of
information based on the heuristic model depends on the difference between an individual’s
actual and desired level of confidence and in cases where it is considerably high. Therefore, the

model is best applicable in arguments where one feels belittled and has the urge to boost their
level of confidence deliberately.
The author goes further to categorize the general dual process model into three stages
namely, categorization of behaviors, dispositional categorization as well as situational correction.
As such, the judgment of traits is initiated by the categorization of the behavior, which questions
what the actor is doing. One first observes the actor be able to identify the ...
