The Colgate-Palmolive was incepted in 1806 as a small candle and soap
venture by William Colgate based in New York. Its first newspaper ad
appeared in 1817. By 1820, the Corporation had set up a starch factory in
New Jersey. Upon the passing of the founder in 1857, the son, Samuel
Colgate, took over the management of Colgate & Company. By 1873, the
company was already selling aromatic toothpaste and scented soap. An
independent soap company was set in Wisconsin, later becoming the
Palmolive Company (Colgate-Palmolive, 2022b). The company also
incepted a pharmacy in New Jersey in 1879, which later became the
Mennen Company. By 1930, the company’s leadership was passed to the
five sons of Samuel Colgate and was already engaging in the active
advertisement. Apart from celebrating its 100th birthday, it merged with

introduced to its toothpaste in 1968 to reduce cavities, while the
Palmolive dish wash detergent was launched in 1966. 1989, the annual

global market presence, improved product efficiency, and adopted
innovative ways of engaging its clients (Colgate-Palmolive, 2022b).
During the Covid-19 in 2020, the venture gave back to the community by
donating 25 million bars of handwashing soap alongside over $20 million
worth of pet, hygiene, and health products.
