The history of trauma in America dates back to the 19th century when physicians began
giving medical attention to injured military personnel during war. Notably, President Abraham
Lincoln was the first U.S. president to spearhead the creation of the first documented trauma
manual between 1861 and 1865. During the American Civil War, fundamental medical
procedures were introduced to improve the efficiency of care towards war victims, which
included the triage system, aid stations, and rapid transportation services. These clinical
standards significantly formed the basis for healthcare provision during World War I and II.
Over the years, psychological trauma has evolved as a social and medical construct. Pre-1914,
some conditions that were characterized by unexplained medical symptoms included Soldier’s
heart disease, nostalgic symptoms, and Da Costa’s Syndrome (Jones & Wessely, 2006).
However, a paradigm shift in the 1970s occurred that changed the management and
understanding of psychological trauma.
Before 1970, it was believed that people without evident predispositions to
psychological trauma, such as family history of mental illnesses, had high chances of recovering
naturally in the event of exposure. Similarly, exposure to a recognized mental disorder was
