Wang Lung, the main character in Pearl Buck’s novel, The Good Earth, is strongly affected
by his socioeconomic status. Throughout the novel he cycles through periods of lavish wealth and
destitution that changes his personality and morals. At the beginning of the novel, Wang Lung is a
farmer. He is poor and all that he has is his farm. He is very passionate about farming and the
farming lifestyle. His life is beginning to change though, because he is getting married to a woman
named O-lan. He begins to change his physical appearance and his responsibilities on the farm
change. He no longer has to take care of his father and uncle, but this responsibility is replaced
when he has to begin taking care of his newborn son. Wang Lung and O-lan begin to accumulate
wealth and they find themselves living well and being respected by townspeople. Wang Lung does
not want to give up his farm during this wealth. He does not pay much attention to O-lan and his
child because he is so wrapped up in his farm. In fact, O-lan gives birth again and he does not want
the child nor does he car...
