Health issues

The Hispanic community has been a significant subject with the increase in morbidity
and mortality rates.

High rates of morbidity among the Hispanic community is a result of a number of
factors like poverty, low incomes, discrimination, language barrier, among other
factors.

The increased mortality rate is a result of diseases like AIDS, heart disease, cancer,
tuberculosis, liver disease, stroke and diabetes.

Health education and promotion recommendations

Some of the barriers to health education and promotion include low levels of
educational attainment, low-income rates and language barrier, among others.

Cultural Group; Hispanics in the United States
I. Culture (20 points)
The United States population is comprised of diverse ethnicities. These ethnic groups
represent various origins and cultures of the communities they come from. The Hispanic
community is one of the many ethnic groups in the United States. It comprises 17% of the
population in the American region (Abraído-Lanza & Echeverría, 2016). With the number of
Hispanics living in the United States, they become key subjects in studying health indicators and
factors. This is because these aspects determine the morbidity and mortality rates of the Hispanic
community.
Hispanics are comprised of people originating from the communities that speak Hispanic.
Most of them originate from Spain, Puerto, Argentina and Mexico, among other countries.
However, most of the Hispanics come from Mexico. Its population total up to the second largest
population after the individual whose origin is in the United States. The Hispanic culture is a
combination of a wide range of ancestral beliefs and cultures. Even with the differences in
culture and beliefs, they all speak the same language. The main language among individuals
from the Hispanic community is majorly Spanish. Majorly Hispanics form the oldest ethnic
group that settled in the United States.
The Hispanic ethnic group comprises 17% of the entire population of the United States.
There are over 55 million Hispanic individuals in America. The white community is the only
population that has more numbers than the Hispanic community; Hispanics form the second
largest population in the American region. Even with these numbers, Hispanics are still
considered as one of the minority groups living in the United States. According to the 2013 and
2014 population data, the number of Hispanics in the United States increased by 2.1% (Cuevas

3
& Williams, 2016). However, this percentage is lower compared to other years. For instance, in
the year 1995 to 2000, the number of Hispanics in the United States increased by 4.8%. The
reduced numbers are a result of the formal education required in America. Additionally, it is a
result of the reduced immigration rates among the Hispanic community. Most of the Hispanic
individuals live in California, Florida and Texas. By 2014, the median age of Hispanic
individuals was 29.
The Health of any population is determined by the social and economic status as well as
the quality of Healthcare the community receives. Most of the Hispanic individuals live in
poverty which affects the kind of health care they receive. Most of these people are strained
financially; hence they cannot afford to pay for insurance covers. The socioeconomic status of
the Hispanic community is reflected in the educational attainment, family income, occupations
and the amount of wealth they accumulate. Hispanics are more likely to work in low wage areas
like construction, agriculture and domestic services, among others, compared to their white
counterparts who mostly work in highly paid areas like technical areas, managerial and
administrative positions.
The socioeconomic status of the Hispanic community and the level of educational
attainment include the challenges that hinder the individual from receiving quality health care.
People who receive low incomes are more likely not to afford other extra costs even if they have
insurance covers, while others cannot afford the insurance coverage. Low education attainment
also impairs the ability of the Hispanic community to go through the complex Healthcare system
and policies, communicate with service providers and follow the given instructions.
Additionally, the low-income rates and educational attainment also affect the rates of insurance
coverage. Lack of effective health insurance affects the various Healthcare costs, which becomes
one of the most significant barriers for the Hispanic community in receiving quality health care.

4
Hispanics are affected by poor living conditions, which are a result of the social and
structural positions, which are majorly the social determinants of Health. Social determinants of
Health result in adverse health conditions among individuals through an aspect that is known to
result in chronic illnesses which trigger behavioural risk factors like substance abuse, poor diet
and other biological effects. Hispanics living in the United States are more likely not to have
completed school, living in poor conditions and most likely speaking in poor English compared
to other immigrants. Hispanic women are among the concerning groups that have recorded an
increase in the rates of adverse Health and social conditions as well as the lack of quality care.
Another barrier that affects the ability of the Hispanic community to receive health care is the
cultural beliefs that are connected to Health (Castillo-Salgad, 2020). Most native Latinos will opt
to seek traditional care first before opting for hospital care, and this delays the treatment process.
Most Hispanics are used to self-treatment because, in most of their countries of origin, there are
numerous pharmaceuticals where they can buy drugs without prescription.
Inaccessibility to health care increases the risks of contracting non-communicable
diseases, which makes the Hispanic community vulnerable because a large percentage of the
population cannot access and afford health care. Hispanics are affected by major health issues
like teen pregnancy, tobacco use and obesity, among others. The major diversities in mortality,
morbidity, risk factors and accessibility to Healthcare is evident in the Hispanic origin countries.
Recent reports depict that some of the leading diseases among the Hispanic community include
high blood pressure, cancer and heart disease, while the causes of mortality are as a result of
diseases like injuries, heart disease and cancer.
Additionally, some of the cultural beliefs in connection with health care among the
Hispanic community contributes to the lack of quality health care. Their language, acculturation
and language are among the most common factors that affect the quality of health care this

5
community receives. A large percentage of the Hispanic community living in America are not
born in the United States, and many others recently migrated into the United States; hence they
still hold unto the behaviours and beliefs as far as health care and Health at large is concerned.
Most of the Hispanics speak Spanish, while a few can speak English well. As per the 2000 data,
28% of the Hispanic community in the United States were naturalized American citizens, which
is generally very low as compared to other immigrants (Statistics, 2021). A large percentage of
them are not documented anywhere. These aspects about the Hispanic community contribute to
the reduced access to health care and the numerous effects that are associated with the low
numbers of Hispanics with insurance covers. The jobs available for immigrants who are
undocumented and cannot speak English fluently are not likely to have the insurance coverage
feature in their employee benefits. There is critical evidence that Hispanics, mostly those of
central and Mexican origin, face tremendous barriers in acquiring health care. This is because the
language barrier is a significant issue among the Hispanic community in health care. Most
Healthcare centres do not have interpreters, or those that have do not have enough. This makes
the hospital team rely on the bilingual staff or the children and families of the patients.
Additionally, lack of fluency also becomes a problem because if the bilingual staff interprets
wrongly, then there will be mistakes throughout the entire process of treatment.
