1. I am a former colony of Japan.
2. After WW2, my territory was divided, and
remains so today.
3. 38° N latitude is the dividing line.
4. The 2 portions of my territory were once
occupied by the U.S. and by the former U.S.S.R.
5. The occupied governments have left, but 2
separate governments remain.
6. The 2 countries wish to reunite, but economic
differences and disagreements over nuclear
weapons have made this difficult.

I was a relatively peaceful place from 1953-1980 -
something that was rather remarkable given the history of
my founding.
The 37% of my population that was Serb and the 14%
that was Croat feared living in a country where Muslims
comprised 48% of the population.
As a result, my Serbs and Croats tried (unsuccessfully)
to unite with neighboring Serbia and Croatia.
To strengthen the case for unification, ethnic cleansing
of Muslims took place.
Leaders of my 3 main ethnic groups reached an
agreement in Dayton, OH in 1996.
In the end, I was divided into 3 main regions, each
dominated by a particular ethnic group.

I am considered by some to be a
sovereign state, others consider me part
of a larger country.
The president and political party in
power desire my sovereignty, but
leaders of the larger country hesitate.
The U.S. considered me to be part of
another country until 1971; since then
they've considered me sovereign.
I am now the most populous state that
is not in the UN.
I am located 120 miles from China.

I am an island containing 2 nationalities that
are geographically isolated.
I gained independence from the British in 1960
and am still home to several British military
bases.
My nationalities have never peacefully
integrated, especially after the 1974 coup. But,
we do supply each other with water and
electricity.
A buffer zone controlled by the U.N. stretches
across the entire island, even through the capital
city of Nicosia. Individuals can cross only at
official crossing points.
The Greek nationality accounts for 78% of the
population, the Turkish 18%.

The numerical minority was in control of the
government here for many years.
The majority of the population was limited in
where they could live, work, attend school, and
travel in this country.
There were (and still are) economic
differences between the minority and majority
groups.
I am a perforated state.
1991 saw an end to my policy of apartheid.
After spending more than 27 years in prison,
Nelson Mandela became my first black
president.

My shape is considered prorupt.
I experienced civil war after 1973 when the
king was overthrown by a military coup.
The government that followed was
sympethetic to the U.S.S.R; the Soviets sent in
troops in 1979, but withdrew 10 years later.
The Soviet-leaning government collapsed in
1992.
In 1995, strict Islamic fundamentalists called
the Taliban came to power.
In 2001, the U.S. invaded me and overthrew
the government because it was harboring
terrorists. The U.S. military is still here
searching for terrorists.

I am an example of a fragmented,
multi-national state.
I contain 4 main nationalities which
hold little independent power, although 2
of them now have separately elected
governments.
Sports unites my people more than
anything else.
English is my official language.
The 3 other languages commonly
spoken here are Welsh, Scottish, and
Irish.

I am the world's largest multi-ethnic state.
20% of the population of my country are not
members of the majority group.
There are at least 170 ethnicities in my
country.
Tatars, Ukrainians, Bashkirs, Chechens,
Chuvashs and Armenians are some of the
largest ethnic groups.
Before 1989 I was part of an even larger
multi-ethnic state whose 15 republics were
based on the 15 largest ethnic groups.
