You diagnose an acute upper respiratory infection, probably viral in nature. Mr. Smith is states that the family is planning a trip out of town starting tomorrow and would like an antibiotic just in case.

Antibiotic prescription for children with acute respiratory tract infections (ARTIs) is on
the increase in the U.S. The prescriptions which account for more than 50% of the treatment
plans for children with ARTIs is as a result of out-patient visits to physicians with complaints of
upper tract infections (Vincent et al., 2013). However, developing an effective communication
plan can reduce the need for prescriptions and thus reduce the prescription levels. In the case of
Mr. Smith and his 4-year-old child, the physician develops a communication plan for both
prescriptive and non-prescriptive therapies to enable the parent to administer treatment even
when on the family trip for the full recovery of the child. It is, however, crucial that the physician
considers using a negative recommendation treatment plan for the child since in this case, the
viral infection may not require prescriptive medication.
