Explanation & Answer
Meiosis- division which creates haploid daughter cells rather then diploid ones like mitosis. It is only found in gametes ( egg and sperm) all other eukaryotic cells divide by mitosis.
Diploid- an organism or cell which contains 2 complete sets of chromosomes(2n)
Haploid- an organism or cell which contains 1 complete set of chromosomes (n)
Gametes- egg or sperm
Homologous Chromosomes-a pair of chromosomes( one from each parent) that have similiar genes but different alleles.
Synapsis-The point in meiosis when the homologous chromosomes line up side by side.
Crossing Over-the exchange of genetic material between homologous chromosomes during meiosis that results in genetic variation of individuals.
Independent assortment-the random assortment of alleles and homologous pairs during meiosis.
