Early language and literacy experiences encompass a holistic approach and include the integration of reading, writing, listening, speaking, and viewing on a daily basis.

This assignment fulfills:

  • Module Outcome 2: You will have planned literacy experiences that integrate reading, writing, listening, speaking, and viewing. (SLO1)
  • Student Learning Outcome 1: You will have described developmental sequences for children’s emergent receptive and expressive language, including literacy acquisition (phonological awareness, phonemic awareness, alphabetic principles, and print concepts).
  • Student Learning Outcome 2: You will have implemented appropriate language and literacy experiences using a broad repertoire of strategies to meet each child’s developmental needs.

Assignment:

  1. Please provide an activity for reading, writing, listening, speaking, and viewing for a preschool age classroom.

Examples:

  • Reading: Read a book and pose questions during the reading to keep children focused.
  • Writing: Have children write the names of the characters from a book previously read (practice basic writing strokes, copy writing names from the book or sounding out letters of the characters’ name and writing the appropriate letters).
  • Listening: Have the children to freeze/stop when stating the word “FREEZE.”
  • Speaking: Ask each child questions daily and allow each child to respond.
  • Viewing: Have children recognize alphabet letters or words daily.

    Grading:

    You will receive credit for a specific preschool activity in each category based on the quality and appropriateness of the activity for the category.

    • Up to 18 Points: Reading Activity
    • Up to 18 Points: Writing Activity
    • Up to 18 Points: Listening Activity
    • Up to 18 Points: Speaking Activity
    • Up to 18 Points: Viewing Activity

    Up to 10 points: Spelling, punctuation, and grammar
