Running head. NATURE VERSUS NURTURE IN HUMAN DEVELOPMENT

Human development is a process by which human behaviour changes progressively from the
time of birth to maturity. It involves a change in habits; physical appearance and intelligence
(Sameroff, 2010).The question whether nature or nurture influences human development is
rather controversial with varied school of thoughts. Each side of the argument has its
supporting ideas. With the limited understanding on the topic of human development, it is not
clear whether development occurs as a result of genetic inheritance (nature) or the interaction
with the environment and different life situations (nurture).
Human development occurs due to the combination of nature and nurture. It is hard to single
out which one comes on top of the other. The physical attributes of an individual are always
identical to those of the parents. Features such as skin colour, head circumference, gender,
talents and predisposition to certain diseases such as sickle cell are as a result of Nature. It
implies that the individual's characteristics are therefore encoded in the genes that he or she
inherited from the parents. The influence of nature, therefore, means as long as certain traits
reside in our genes, we will continue to express the different abilities as we mature and
continue to grow (McCrae et al, 2000). Nurture, on the other hand, is the various
environmental factors we interact with as we grow and they influence our human
development. The environmental factors affect how we relate to others, how we talk and the
decisions we make (Coll et al 2014). Teenage years, for instance, are predominated by peer
pressure to perform certain actions which may dictate how that individual lives after that. The
influence is vast and can range from a family unit, institutions and to a larger extent politics.
Nature is the single modulator of how an infant grows to the level of an adult with normal
physique and characteristics. The way the skin or hair colour complexion changes with age is
genetically coded. Therefore, the negative and positive aspects of an individual are inherited.
