Blum defines plagiarism as the illegal appropriation of another person’s ideas (2009).
The problem of student plagiarism has become prevalent as a result of disharmony between
administrators, professors, and students (Löfström, Trotman, Furnari & Shephard, 2015). The
paper describes the primary tactics of dealing with plagiarism and changes in notions of
originality from the 20th century. Besides, it explains reasons for the failure of traditional
methods and offers other solutions to deal with student plagiarism.
Blum suggests two primary tactics of preventing plagiarism that include the use of honor
codes and disciplinary action. Honor codes make an appeal to students to do the right thing
(Blum, 2009). Thus, students have to conduct themselves virtuously in the academic
environment. Disciplinary action involves administrators and faculty members who ensure that
students embrace the rules of academic integrity (Blum, 2009).
Blum states that traditional efforts to curb plagiarism fail because students have a vague
understanding of academic integrity (2009). She explains that students pursue education for
achievement and success only but do not value the learning process. Students desire to gain
admission to competitive institutions and must succeed at any cost (Roberts, 2008). The concept
