Description

Reflection is an important part of any learning we do. You'll often be asked to reflect in your college career and in the professional workplace. Reflections are a space where you can think about what you learned, what you did, and what you'd do differently. For example, if you play sports, you know that teams often meet to discuss how a game went, what you learned from the experience, and what needs to be done differently next time. In the work place, you may be asked to explain the work you've done in the last month to your boss, what challenges you faced, what solutions you found, and what you recommend going forward. In the school setting, reflections not only help you, the student, consider what you learned, but they help the teacher understand the unseen work that you did.

You've worked hard to learn new concepts, understand a new genre, write and revise your essay--and I want to know how it went. write a short  reflection about this paper and the revision process.

Here are some questions your reflection might address:

  • Comment on the process of writing the first draft. What was the most challenging part of writing this paper?  Was there a part of your identity or experience that was hard to name? What concepts or ideas were hardest to wrestle with? What part of the paper or project did you find easiest or most rewarding?
  • Comment on the revision process and your attempts to improve your paper. What did you work hardest on to revise in this paper? For example, was there a comment readers gave you that you worked especially hard to address? What comment or feedback did you get (and from whom) that helped you understand something about this paper or your own writing? What did you change as a result of the feedback?
  • Comment on the final product or the unit as a whole. What do you hope I will notice about your essay? Is there a section or element that you want to point my attention to? What would you have changed if you had more time to work on this? What skills do you think you learned most during this unit? (This can be something new you learned or a skill you improved.)

Surname 1 Name Professor Name Course Date Value of Communication Language and communication are the links between people and culture. People can only understand individual desires through communication because it involves sharing personal ideas. Also, people like to interact socially through communication and sharing methods and techniques for making life better. Therefore, language is an essential element of every culture because it is the only way people can communicate norms, values, and beliefs from one generation to another. As a Chinese citizen, I understand my culture and interact with community members because we use a common language. Language learning is a continuous process because we learn new vocabulary and improve our grammatical skills regularly. Through education, I am pleased to have learned the English language. It helps me communicate with English speakers around the world. Communication in the English language allows me to learn about other people’s cultures and make new acquaintances from foreign countries. Since the language barrier may hinder communication, I will continue practicing English to enhance my communication. Today, I value communication because it creates a conducive environment for making new friends. It is impossible to acquire communication skills (especially in a foreign country) without learning new languages. I started learning English in China, but most people in my neighborhood did not understand the language. This issue forced me to move to a foreign Surname 2 country, where English is among the primary languages. I believed there would be enough time to practice and master the new language if I moved to a country where people use English widely. My passion for the English language helped me visit multiple foreign countries, including Ireland, France, and Spain. Today, I am happy knowing that my friends come from diverse countries. Every time I moved to a new country, it was easy to interact with people and make new friends. Communication helps people disclose their cultural beliefs and social expectations to others. Fortunately, English helped me learn other people’s ways of life. My interaction with foreigners helped me ask questions about foreign cultures, lifestyles, and communities. As a result, it was not difficult for me to adopt foreign social norms and beliefs. For example, I used the English language to enquire about moral practices accepted in foreign nations, which helped me stay out of trouble and gain social acceptance. Without studying English, I would be limited to communication with Chinese people because I would not engage in productive conversations with foreigners. Besides, communication helps people collaborate during important activities as it helps to share ideas and experiences. Without learning English, I would not remember memories of what we did together with my foreign friends. I remember the day we organized an English contest with my foreign friends and winners could get a reward. Although I struggled to complete an English test, it was a good moment because we could communicate our experiences after the contest. Every nation has its own dominant culture, food patterns, and rituals. Therefore, communication is crucial every time someone visits a new country. It helps foreigners communicate with residents to know more about areas they can find food and accommodations. Language facilitates this kind of communication. For example, I do not fear moving to any Surname 3 country where the English language is recognized because it would take a few hours to get used to people and areas around me through communication. Besides, it is costly to visit a new country and hire a translator knowing you could learn the new language yourself. The ability to communicate in diverse languages makes it easy for someone to reside and work in foreign countries. However, it is necessary to study the language in that country to interact with people in your new workplace. Today, most companies employ people from diverse cultures to facilitate inclusivity. Therefore, there are job opportunities for foreigners in other countries if only you can communicate confidently in the language accepted in the organization. Learning English exposes someone to a variety of job opportunities in the world. Today, I am confident and comfortable having lived and worked in a country far away from my home country. Besides, repeated communication helped me develop self-esteem because the English language allows me to interact with different kinds of people. However, you cannot engage in effective communication without understanding the language understood by the other person. Language may hinder communication and make it difficult to deliver the intended message. I once experienced this challenge during my English class presentation. It was hard for me to pronounce some words during the presentation. This failure made everyone laugh at me. Instead of people concentrating on my message, they got distracted by laughing. It was a bad experience for me because my audience could no longer concentrate during my presentation. Also, the language barrier may limit communication between people regardless of their proximity. In my home town, English speakers face challenges communicating with locals. Fortunately, they have me as a translator, and I have helped my neighbors communicate with foreigners. Surname 4 After overcoming language barriers, communication require a rhetorical situation informed by the expected audience. According to Trapani, people should understand their audience to communicate messages that interest them (1). Besides, audience expectations allow the speaker to organize the message based on the current context. For example, fig. 1 shows the reactions of a satisfied audience. The figure shows clients maintaining eye contact with the speaker–an indication of language proficiency and communication skills. Moreover, communication is about speaking and listening. That is why learning a new language is crucial in society. Fig. 1. Man Standing In front Of People; Pexel.com, 19 Dec. 2018, https://www.pexels.com/photo/man-standing-in-front-of-people-1709003/. In conclusion, communication allows people to exchange ideas about culture, norms, and beliefs. Foreigners can interact with residents if they can speak a common language. Therefore, Surname 5 language is essential for effective communication. By learning new languages, people can work in other countries because they can easily communicate. After learning the English language, I have visited many countries and made foreign friends. I help my neighbors communicate with foreigners through translation in my home country. However, language may hinder communication because different cultures use different languages. Therefore, people should overcome language barriers by learning and practicing new languages.
