Data Backup and Disaster Recovery

This paper will examine data backup planning, disaster recovery planning and business
continuity planning. It will identify and describe the elements needed in order for these plans to
be successful. Any interdependencies will also be identified and described.
Data Backup Planning
Data backup planning is a necessary function in any corporation. Because a solid data
backup plan is essential, it should include the elements needed in order to make it as efficient as
possible. That being said, it is important to keep the plan simple so that it can be easily
maintained.
The fundamentals
A good data backup plan includes a set of fundamental items which require actions. First,
data should be copied on a consistent basis. Once data is copied, is should be stored in varying
channels. In addition the backed up data needs to be kept in an isolated area. (Hawkins, Yen, &
Chou, 2000)
Make it happen
Every business has different needs and constraints when it comes to creating a workflow
for data backup, so it is important that before the planning begins, that certain key points are
considered. One important consideration is possible threats to an organization’s precious data.
Many experts suggest assessing possible threats to company's data and then, based on probability
and importance, decide prioritization of action to minimize the identified threats accordingly. For
instance, if an organization has data of a highly personal nature, such as a medical insurance
