Overlapping Identities
In recent years due to perhaps a socially divisive political climate, people have become
increasingly aware of differences in race, gender, religion, sexual orientation, and social class,
among other identifiers. People, however, have always had multiple identities, but the
intersectionality of these identities has however gained more focus. White people, for instance,
may not have an intricate understanding of how racism acts as a barrier for people of color when
it comes to economic and social progress. As such, society’s rules are not universally applicable
since some people have more of an edge than others. For instance, even though it is well
documented that women have to work much harder than men to make it in the corporate world
due to sexism, women of color have to work much harder since they have to overcome racism
and sexism. From my perspective, the most important identities in my life are my ethnic identity,
religious identity, and social class identity.
My ethnic identity is a very important part of my life since it does not only determine
how I perceive myself but also how others perceive me. Ethnic identity refers to a sense of self
that is integrated into a particular ethnicity. In my particular case, I am Latino and what I love
