Barnes and Nobles Inc. Strategic Management Process
The strategic management of any company refers to the definition of the strategies of a
particular organization. It involves the choice of a certain set of strategies by the managers on
behalf of the company aimed at achieving the goals and performance improvement. It is
supposed to be a continuous process which assesses the company performance about the
associated industries and businesses (Alkhafaji, 2011). It is also designated to cater for the
present and future competitive environment. The strategies are not permanent but can be
modified or reassessed to meet the prevailing conditions. This paper evaluates the strategic
management process that is evident in the Barnes and Nobles Inc. It aims at establishing its
mission, vision, and strategies applied in its operation.

Environmental scanning
For any organization to come up with practical and realistic strategies, it has to familiarize itself
with the happenings surrounding it. This is only possible by seeking relevant information and
data from the environment and processing it to come up with baseline information.
Environmental scanning is, therefore, the process involved in the collection, scrutiny, and
presentation of the information for strategic reasons. It assists in the analysis of both internal and
external environmental factors affecting the organization. After conducting the environmental
analysis process, it should continuously evaluate it with a purpose of improving it.
