WannaCry Ransomware
Name and date (duration) of the attack
WannaCry malicious software attack occurred on 12th May 2017 and lasted for four days
(Hypr, 2017). The malicious software attacked large companies in Britain, Spain, Ukraine,
Russia, and Taiwan, holding vital data to ransom. Likewise, the attack targeted the National
Health Services in Britain, locking up PCs and data.
Technical Mechanism and Features
Ransomeware is a meticulous nasty malware that locks or blocks users’ access to data or
computers and demands a ransom to return functionality. It uses a vulnerability to infect PC
operating systems, particularly windows, and encrypts data before demanding ransom payments
for decryption keys. The Windows PCs exploit through the EternalBlue tool, which deceptively
allows the SMP protocol to accept packets from other networks. The malware is a crypto
Ransomeware worm that targets Windows PCs. Once in the computer, the worm encrypts critical
files, giving the perpetrators control over encryption keys, which they use to demand ransom
payments.
The goal of the WannaCry attack
The main goal of WannaCry malware was destruction by gaining control over Windows
PCs and data. The malware encrypts data in Windows PCs, and perpetrators demand ransom
payments through Bitcoin. WannaCry Ransomeware gains access to device or computer
encryption and locks the data stored, giving the attackers a higher bargaining power over
controlled data. The malware can spread from PC to PC within the network. Typically, the
infected PCs communicate with their central server before starting the encryption process.
