The Role of Artificial Intelligence in Society
Bartneck, Christoph, Michael J. Lyons, and Martin Saerbeck. "The relationship between emotion
models and artificial intelligence." arXiv preprint arXiv:1706.09554 (2017).
This article explores the role that emotional models may play in the development and
implementation of artificial intelligence. The article acknowledges the important role that
emotions play in human interactions, for which they suggest that emotions will likely also
play an important role in human-computer interaction. More specifically, the authors
suggest that the development of artificial intelligence will include the development of
computational methods for the expression and processing of emotions, as friendly
interfaces will need to understand users’ emotions in order to meet their needs, just as
contemporary computers are often involved in interpreting users’ intentions.
The article provides valuable insights regarding the potential value of emotional
processing and expression in artificial intelligence. Current models of artificial
intelligence is focused on cognition and may be losing valuable information that could
otherwise be used to assist users. For this reason, an insight into the potential role of
emotional processing in the development of more advanced models of artificial
intelligence can provide the pathway toward a better understanding of how artificial
intelligence works and might work in the future.
Bostrom, Nick, and Eliezer Yudkowsky. "The ethics of artificial intelligence." The Cambridge
handbook of artificial intelligence (2014): 316-334.
This article provides a comprehensive review on the importance of ethics in artificial
intelligence. Currently, there is a growing concern that advanced artificial intelligence
could pose a danger toward users or even toward humanity as a whole. For this reason,
the authors stress the importance of development ethical models that can be used in
guiding all steps of artificial intelligence development and implementation. It is not only
important to ensure that artificial intelligence does not harm users but also to avoid
situations in which artificial intelligence could be itself harmed. For this reason, artificial
intelligence, the authors suggest, should never mean self-aware entities.
This article makes an important difference between artificial intelligence and selfawareness, for which it is valuable for providing a clarification of terms that are often
confused. While an artificial intelligent system can learn new ways of solving problems,
it does not pose the necessary cognitive elements that would make it self-aware nor
should it pose. The authors believe that the goal of artificial intelligence should be to
improve human condition, for which ethical standards meant to ensure that artificial
intelligence cannot become harmful are necessary.
Dilsizian, Steven E., and Eliot L. Siegel. "Artificial intelligence in medicine and cardiac
imaging: harnessing big data and advanced computing to provide personalized medical
diagnosis and treatment." Current cardiology reports 16.1 (2014): 441.
This article reviews the role that Artificial intelligence could have in medicine and
cardiac imaging. According to the authors of the article, artificial intelligence can
significantly advance personalized medic...
