Abstract
Crimes against property are common in our surroundings. Robbery is a felony crime in the
United States that had its origin from the colonial days. It was a crime punishable by death
under the historical common law and was among the early crimes to be made punishable by
the state. Under the historical common law, the elements of robbery were evidence of taking
another person’s property through force or instilling fear in them to surrender their belonging
to the defendant. Robbery refers to an act of taking personal property from their person or
immediate presence against their will through force or intimidation. Most states still rely on
the historical common law elements; however, some changes have been made in state statutes
to align their definition with the current needs. Additionally, concrete justifications of
robbery crimes have been reinforced to ensure that prosecutions use detailed evidence to
reach their conclusions.
