From struggling in school and dropping out at the age of 16, Richard Branson has
managed to become one of the world’s respected entrepreneurs. He is widely known for his
Laissez-faire leadership which focuses on giving employees autonomy which allows them to be
creative and innovative (Niphadkar, 2017). As a team leader, I would like to emulate Richard
Branson and develop to become a leader who trusts those around them and supports them to
become the best versions of themselves. Such leadership resonates with my attitudes as a leader
and how to work with others to achieve a common goal.
Sir Richard Charles Nicholas Branson was born in the United Kingdom on July 18, 1950.
In his early life, the leader struggled in school and even dropped out at the age of 16. It was at
this age where he would start his first business by running a magazine. However, as the business
started failing in the 1960s, he started the Virgin Mail Order Records. This would lead to a
decision to start Virgin Records which became a music sensation. He would continue building
his Virgin brand which now controls more than 400 businesses across the world. However, his
achievements don’t just come from his business acumen but also his leadership skills, which I
would like to emulate as a leader.
As the CEO of the Virgin Group, Richard Branson utilizes a laissez-faire leadership
which is characterized by his ability to influence, motivate, and enable team members to
contribute towards the success of the team. The leader is known to state that he likes setting up
