Description
One of the greatest sources of misunderstandings throughout social life, and why it's very important to try to see the world from the perspective of others, is the tendency for privilege and lack of privilege to shape how individuals and groups perceive social reality. Generally speaking, it is very common for people to become desensitized to their privileges, and take them for granted to the point that they are oblivious to the plight of less fortunate people, who are denied those opportunities. For example, it can be very difficult for a child from a stable home to imagine the distractions and stressors that less fortunate children have to endure, this in turn can make it difficult for the more privileged child to understand why less privileged schoolmates struggle academically or behaviorally, leading to judgment and even prejudice.
Write a 650-word paper discussing an issue from any aspect of social life, in which you feel an individual or group misunderstands another because of a difference in privileges (feel free to use a personal experience.)
Include the following:
- Discuss the differences in privilege involved.
- What misunderstandings seem to be occurring?
- What prejudices have resulted from the misunderstandings?
Format your assignment according to appropriate course-level APA guidelines.

The term “privilege” can be defined as a special advantage, right, or immunity that is
available or granted to only an individual or group of people. This concept is constructed as well

based on historical power struggles.
As a result, individuals are classified by those that
encounter them, and by virtue of the fact that those who view them are influenced by existing
constructed norms; such classifications may, therefore, be acts of unconscious (Ballantine and
Roberts, 2012). This simply means that even in cases where one is aware of a privilege, it
becomes hard to eliminate it. This is the reason why for example many people may not be aware
of why they others in a particular way or can choose to ignore realities that go with a certain
privilege.
The term white privilege variously known as the white skin privilege refers to the societal
privileges that people who are considered as white in our society tend to benefit from as opposed
to the privileges by those who are non-whites in similar social, economic, or political
circumstances. The white privilege concept has come to be used in academic scholarship in
analyzing the way racism, as well as racialized societies, have an effect on the white or whiteskinned people’s lives. As a result, this concept has also come to imply the right of assuming the
universality of an individual’s experiences by marking those of others as different and or
exceptional at the same time perceiving one normal. The white privilege concept has received a
fair share of attention as well as opposition with some critics claiming that the “whiteness” term
is...
