What was her PURPOSE for this TedTalk? What was her EXIGENCE (motivation)? Who was her AUDIENCE? Discuss what you think--and remember that someone's exigence is sometimes different from their purpose. 2. When Kakenya Ntaiya was planning her TedTalk, "A Girl Who Demanded School," she spent time planning her PROPOSAL for this TedTalk. Using the handout for the Initial Research Proposal, I will upload it fill it out as if you are Ms. Ntaiya, with answers for each of the categories. Make yours look like my example, but as if it was written by Kakenya Ntaiya): MOONSHOWER / 1020 Due Date: _______________________________ INITIAL RESEARCH PROJECT PROPOSAL INSTRUCTIONS: • Ask yourself what the PURPOSE of your project is—to describe, survey, analyze, persuade, explain, classify, compare, or contrast. • Consider your audience. What do they need to know? Who will be interested? • What is your stance or attitude toward the topic? What influences have shaped your stance? • Consider how many and what kinds of sources you need. • Consider practical matters, such as time commitment, length of project, and when it is due. For the initial Research Proposal, the elements include: Broad Topic Narrowed Topic Issue (a problem you see within your topic) Research Question (turn your issue into a question) Working Thesis (answer your resesrch question with points you can argue) It is very likely that you will change your mind about your topic—I am not holding you hostage to THIS topic. I simply want you to learn how to think about turning a broad topic into a workable paper idea. During the Annotated Bibliography project, you will be performing a lot of research on your topic and any offshoot topics that occur to you. Before the Annotated Bibliography project is finished, you WILL have hammered down the topic that will drive your final project—and most of the research you do for your Annotated Bibliography will be used in the writing of that research project. For that reason, you do not want to take the Annotated Bib project lightly. Be thoughtful and disciplined during the research process. WORKING THESIS: Although recent data show that small family farms are more endangered than ever, some enterprising farmers have reversed the trend by growing specialized products and connecting with consumers through farmers’ markets and community-supported agriculture programs. NOTICE that the working thesis has a TOPIC + OPINION + POINTS: The TOPIC is endangered small family farms. The OPINION I hold is implicitly positive--that small family farms can reverse negative trends. The POINTS I will argue are: 1) growing specialized products, 2) connecting with consumers through farmers' markets, and 3) connecting through community-supported agriculture programs.
