Racial disparity in Corrections
Executive summary

An important arm of the United States Criminal Justice System is the Corrections; the
body is tasked with supervision of individuals who have been incarcerated, those in
rehabilitation, and the ones in parole or out on probation. However, the department has come
under a lot of criticism when it comes to issues of racial bias; studies have shown significant
differences in the numbers of those incarcerated based on racial grounds.
This report will delve deeper into the Corrections arm of the Criminal Justice System. It
will begin by assessing the Criminal system as a whole then narrow down to the Corrections. A
detailed look at the statistics will then follow focusing on different parameters such as the
incarceration figures, the prison populations, and compositions. The general outlook will then be
focused on the particular issue of racial disparity where it I will attempt to dig deeper on some of
the concerns. The final part will be the conclusion of the main sections of the discussions.
Introduction
Criminal Justice System
The American Criminal Justice Systemhas its roots in the Presidents Commission on Law
Enforcement and Administration of Justice of 1967; the commission developed a report with a
list of recommendations for the prevention and control of crime. The recommendations were
aimed at improving coordination in the three primary arms namely the law enforcement, the
courts, and the correctional department. The criminal justice system was born and had a new
mandate of enforcing standards of conduct that would be critical for the protection of both the
individual and the community.

detention in a temporary manner of the said criminal elements while the courts deliberate on the
matter (Dempsey and Forst, 2011). Additionally, the law enforcement carries out deterrent
activities and prevention of crimes, a task that is widely done by the patrolling officers. They
may also be involved in the discharge of other orders as guided by the court, and related services.
The courts' work is in finding out the truth on matters brought before them, carry out
adjudication, deciding on the penalty of a given offense. They can also carry out a peaceful
settlement of disputes for parties that are in conflict if it is a private matter. Guided by the nature
of a case, a crime may be referred to a federal or a state court. The corrections role is to carry out
punishment, treatment, and supervision of the individuals who have been convicted.
The Corrections
Corrections is a term used more commonly than penology, and it is used to refer to the
United State agencies that are charged with supervision of people when they are incarcerated, in
rehabilitation, under parole or in probation (Correctional Officer, 2017). The duty of the
corrections goes beyond the confines of the prison walls and covers a wide array of programs as
mentioned above. It carries out the role of monitoring of inmates while in prison and also
includes the offenders who have been released conditionally together with those under
probationary terms and may be required to be supervised (Correctional Officer, 2017). The
correctional officers have a huge role to play and greater responsibilities, and th...
