Executive Summary

Within Temptation was founded by guitarist Robert Westerholt and Vocalist Sharon den Adel in
April 1995. This band is a Dutch symphonic metal band. Critics have classified this band as
gothic metal, even though the “gothic” influences changes with every album. Their most wellknown and prominent sound has been described as symphonic metal. It is however worth noting
that some of their earlier album, for instance debut album, was majorly gothic metal. Within
Temptation became prominent within the Dutch underground scene after releasing their debut
album Enter in the year 1997. It was not until the year 2001 that this music band was known to
the general public, from their 2nd album Mother Earth, with the single “Ice Queen”.

Environmental Analysis

Within Temptation stands as one of the biggest musical acts of Holland. Over 3 million CDs
have been sold by the band worldwide. Yet again, this music band has been awarded 2 MTV
European Music Awards. It’s been 21 years since they started releasing their material, Hydra
being their 6th studio album.
A. The Marketing Environment
1. Competitive forces: The most purchased albums in Holland are the top charts from US
and UK. Music productions such as EMI concerns themselves more with making revenue
out of the sale of their CDs. They therefore promote famous artist who from their names
alone increase the sale of these CDs.
