squat in an abandoned structure from where she starts her crusade for opposing the oppressive
politicians. The setting is in New York city, Manhattan during the mid-twentieth century around
the 1880’s. The book brings out several aspects of the society ranging from unity, poor housing,
utility service, and politics. The author has employed various characters to bring out the various

repetitive or dispensable. The storyline features a struggle of ideas between the minorities and
the influential class and the writer employs various tools such as themes and character
development in order to exemplify his plot. These tools and their use are discussed in the

Discussion
Chodorkoff has done an exemplary task of demonstrating the side of New York city
where the squatters lived. For example, the young bohemians who found no running water.
