The Parthenon is perfect, if Souto de Moura says so, who would think otherwise? But it is also
much more complicated than we tend to think. An essay recently published in English, 'The
Parthenon Enigma' (by Joan Breton Connelly, a professor at NYU in New York), tells the story
of Athena's temple from this idea of complexity. And it brings some surprise.
Basically, the big issue of 'The Parthenon Enigma' consists of the reinterpretation of the central
scene of the eastern frieze (the side of the main facade) of the temple. The traditional reading of
the frieze, explains Breton Connelly, speaks of the offering of a peplos (a robe) to Athena, in
what was the culminating point of the festival that celebrated the goddess. However, the author
claims that the frieze represents a much less comforting divine myth: the account of King
Erechtheus, who, according to what the oracle had told him, delivered his youngest daughter in
