Introduction
An environmental scan is explained as the ability to possess and exploit information about
patterns, tendencies, occurrences, as well as relationships in a firm’s interior and exterior
surroundings (Barney, 2014). This activity is usually undertaken with the intention of establishing
expansion and predictions of elements with the capability of influencing the effectiveness of a
firm. It assists the administration of any commercial entity to determine the future of their business.
This scanning tends to establish the opportunities as well as the threats present in the environment.
When forming a strategy, a firm is expected to exploit the opportunities and try to reduce the
threats that are present.
Probable Insinuations of Environmental Analysis
An environmental analysis that is undertaken prior to the start of any commercial
undertakings is influential to the effectiveness or failure of the firm. A suitable environmental scan,
therefore, has significant effects on the strategic plan of the company (Gupta, 2013). Following
the identification of the opportunities as well as threats that are present in the environment, an
individual has the knowledge on where they are supposed to enhance their efforts for suitable
outcomes. This analysis could have consequences of determining whether one would still start the
business or not. Therefore, an analysis that reveals numerous negative elements in the environment
could make an individual disregard the possibility of starting the business. The strategic plan could
also focus on expansion if the environment is suitable for this company.
Therefore, in this scenario, the John Peter and Smith Hospital established that the needs of
the community comprised of the concern of drug abuse, chronic diseases, and heart illnesses.
Therefore, following the environmental scan, the institution had its strategic plan influenced. It

focused on providing services of rehabilitation, ophthalmological treatment, and the medication of
heart illnesses. The strategic plan of this institution also focuses on extending its services to the
homeless individuals with the aim of ensuring that everyone accesses the required medical
services. It also intends to enhance the quality of medical services hence strategizing on the
appropriate measures that would enhance quality.
