Casey has a rectanhular garden that measures 9 m wide by 3 m long. She wants to increase the area to 192 m^2 by increasing the width and length by the same amount what will be the dimesions of the new garden?

You would label the extra mystery distance as d. And you know it must be added to both dimensions to make a 192m^2 garden:

( 9 + d ) x ( 3 + d ) = 192

Multiply out the brackets and solve for d:

27 + 12d + d^2 = 192

d^2 + 12d - 165 = 0

(d + 20.17...)(d - 8.17...) = 0

So d = 8.17 is the only positive solution. But since it's not an integer, I expect there is an error in the original question?

You should follow this general strategy though! :-)
