1. Go to Debate This on page 317 and discuss the issue of lawsuits against tobacco
companies. What policies does your organization have with regard to use of tobacco at
work? Do your company benefits include penalties for tobacco use or rewards for not
using or quitting use of tobacco products? What changes might you suggest?
In regards to the policies about the use of tobacco at work, my company
implemented several policies about it; No cigarettes are allowed inside the workplace. No
smoking while driving in the company service cars. The company gives a break to the
employees to use the cigarette right after their work only and in a right place, but not
inside in the company or in any corner of the office. Furthermore, the company
implement some penalties to those who are not following the policies about the use of
tobacco, and has been advising and always reminding the employees to be responsible
and to avoid breaking the policy for the safety of the company. But, I think, the company
must change their approach about the smokers. The company must support the smoker
employees. Following the reasoning of not penalizing anyone for smoking, the company's
policy on smoking must be comprehensive and therefore must include measures of help
and support to quit smoking (Heathfield, 2016). This possibility will help to guarantee
and facilitate the commitment of those who smoke in compliance with the policy
adopted. A systematic company policy on smoking prevention can achieve several
outcomes. Reducing the exposure of employees - smoke or not - to tobacco smoke, the
effects of which are now clear. Support for people who have quit smoking to consolidate
abstinence. The motivation for smoking employees to stop smoking. Limiting
consumption among those who smoke and do not want to quit, or have managed to quit.
Since smokers do not tend to compensate for the number of cigarettes smoked during
working hours. Prevention of conflicting situations between people who smoke and those
who do not smoke.
