PART I
Review of ‘After the Paris Attacks’
‘After the Paris attacks’ is a book inspired by a conference held after violent attacks in
Paris, in 2015. The Violent attacks on journalists and Shoppers raised important global
concerns on security, terrorism, and the role of media and its freedom of expression. The
book was published by the University of Toronto after the March 9, 2015 conference, and it
explores the aftermath of the Paris attacks. The editors of the book; Edward M Iacobacci and
Stephen J Troope analyse how the world reacted to the attacks, how it should have reacted,
offers solutions on how the world should respond in future, and how to balance the need for
security, justice, and tolerance for various cultures (Edward Iacobuuci, 2015).
The book captures an aspect of religion, culture, and pluralism, and advises on how to
deal with immigration after the attacks. One of the most important issues raised in this aspect
of the book is the need to address Islamophobia and antisemitism by calling upon Europe to
establish values which enforce anti-discrimination against Islam. The book encourages
diversity in schools and highlights the need for young immigrants to access fair opportunities
in terms of school and jobs. The book also highlights the association of Islam with terrorism
and the impact which this generalisation has through its creation of self-criticism and crisis
among Muslims. The book calls upon the French republic to come into terms with its colonial
past, and embrace Islamic immigrants. One of the issues highlighted by the book as a barrier
against solving terrorism is the constant debate on whether Islam is compatible with
republican values. This debate acts as a barrier between the possibilities which exists of
integrating Muslim immigrants into the French culture. The book also highlights that in its
attempt to fight terrorism, a government should not undermine important human rights and
moral issues such as freedom, openness and tolerance.
