For your reply post, consider and address the following questions:

  • Based on the response of the classmate below, what similarities and differences exist between states? (My state is Wisconsin)
  • If the subject is mandated, should parents be allowed to exempt their children? Based on this decision, are there public health risks?

"In the state of Minnesota there is a requirement for schools to come up with curriculum that teaches sex education. The information provided within the curriculum has to education students on STD’s and abstinence until marriage. The material has to be technically accurate and the information has to be up to date. There also has to be training provided to the staff member or teacher who will be teaching the material.

To be honest I found this discussion post hard to write since there are a lot of things to consider when debating the appropriate age for sex educations in schools. The age that makes the most sense to me personally would be middle school, grades 6-8. I choose this age range because it the age where children are starting to go through puberty and their bodies are changing. This is also the age when children normally get out of the “elementary” and playful stage. They begin to mature a little more and the find interest other partners.

As far as what topics should be discussed, I would think all topics should be discussed. This would include STD’s, abstinence, contraceptives, and safe sex. It makes more sense to me to provide all of the material so the students have a full understanding of sex education. Plus it gives them a chance to be provided with information from reliable sources instead of getting the information from an older friend who may have been exposed to more material then a younger student.

I don’t think that sex education classes should be mandated in schools but I do think that schools should offer them. Parents should be involved and make decisions on what they believe is appropriate for their children. Especially since some children mature faster than others. I remember when I first had sex education classes in 5th grade and our parents had to sign a permission slip in order for us to attend the class. Again, this was a hard discussion for me since I have a child that’s 1 year away from middle school and I personally am not ready for that reality."
