Cultural competence is a set of matched attitudes, behaviors as well as policies that are
put together in one system, among professionals or agency that enables the system, the
professional or agency to work efficiently in all cross-cultural situations (Hanser, & Gomila,
2015). It is all about our actions and willingness to create an understanding between people. It is
also about being respectful of all other cultural differences and being open to the various cultural
perspectives. Cultural competence is about strengthening the cultural security and helps to work
towards the equality of opportunities. Creating healthy relationships across all cultural diversities
is a fundamental aspect of cultural competence, and founded on understanding everyone’s
expectations as well as attitudes. Subsequently, it is important to know the strengths of each
other and use these strengths build a healthy relationship. Culture is a foundation block of
individual’s identity and a healthy sense of belonging and of whom people are in society. The
principles of trust, equity, social justice, fairness and respect for diversity are the underlying
cultural competence. Cultural competence is also the ability to communicate, understand as well
as people’s cross cultural efficient interaction. In cultural competence, it is essential for people to
develop a positive attitude for all cultural differences. In cultural competence, one should go
beyond thinking about their culture to identifying and challenging their cultural assumptions,
beliefs and also values and ensure that he or she is interacting at the level of a cultural interface.
