Introduction
Working in healthcare can be both complex and challenging but rewarding also. Each
shift is filled with different patients who come with different expectations and choices that
bring positive and negative experiences. Different ethical principles govern the healthcare
profession, each with a unique objective. These ethics helps healthcare professionals view
complex issues and make recommendations that do not hurt patients (Varkey, 2021). Due to
the dynamic environment of healthcare, these principles were created to help healthcare
professionals make sound decisions as they navigate patient care.
Principles of Health Care Ethics
The principle of autonomy is a healthcare ethic that enables patients to make
decisions regarding their bodies during and before treatment. Patients come to the hospital
intending to receive care. However, as a health care professional, one is not supposed to
coarse or persuade a patient to take a specific treatment plan which is not in their best interest
(Gómez-Vírseda, De Maeseneer, & Gastmans, 2019). Ideally, this principle enables patients
