In Memory Database Management System
Introduction
An in memory database management system which is shortened as IDMS can be defined as a
database management system that chiefly relies on the main memory for the storage of computer data.
Main memory is also known as primary storage is the only one directly accessible to the Central
Processing Unit. In memory database systems are usually considered better than database
management systems that employ disk storage mechanism due to their speed. Disk storage
mechanism refers to the use of secondary storage in database management. Secondary storage differs
from main memory since it is not directly accessible by the Central Processing Unit where data
manipulation takes place (Elmasri, R. 2017).
According to research, there are more advantages to using the IDMS as compared to the
minimal manageable shortcomings that come with it. It would indeed be appropriate to replace the
traditional database system which employs disc storage, with the much faster in memory database
management system. This is a research paper whereby I will provide a critical review of the
advantages of using an in memory database management system, as compared to the use of the
traditional database system. It will supported by empirical evidence.
Discussion
In memory database systems are quicker than on-disk database management systems.
Currently, researchers have proven that IMDS is faster because it stores its data entirely in the
main memory which contrasts the traditional database systems. Working with data in memory is
much expedient than reading from a file system, therefore IMDS can actually perform tasks faster.
