In 1874, a self-described working woman wrote a letter to a newspaper read by trade union
men, the Working Man`s Advocate. In the letter, she writes that the world does not accord
any privileges to women workers, but if she was to fight for her interests, men would say
how rough and coarse she was, why a woman cannot be virtuous if she does mingle with
the toilers? This letter describes the situation, the tension that erupted after the Civil War.
The war was a breakeven point to wage earning women. They began to reevaluate their role
